Why Isn’t My Business Showing Up on ChatGPT?

Last reviewed: Oct 2026 · ClickThisLink Team

Usually it’s one of four things: ChatGPT’s crawlers are blocked, your site has too little readable text, AI can’t tell what or where your business is, or few other sites mention you. The first three live on your website and can be checked in seconds. The fourth takes longer. Answers also vary, so test fairly first.

First, How Do I Test It Fairly?

ChatGPT’s answers change with the wording, your location, the model and the day. One missing mention doesn’t prove much. Before you change anything:

  1. Ask three to five questions a real customer would ask (“best dog groomer in [your town],” “who fixes furnaces on weekends near [town]”), not just your business name.
  2. Ask on two or three different days, in a fresh chat each time.
  3. Ask directly: “What do you know about [business name] in [town]?” If it knows nothing, or gets details wrong, it can’t find good information about you.
  4. Note which competitors it names and which sources it links. Those links show where ChatGPT is getting its information.

Cause 1: Are ChatGPT’s Crawlers Blocked?

Your robots.txt file can tell OAI-SearchBot, the crawler ChatGPT search uses to show websites, to stay out. OpenAI says sites that block it won’t be shown in ChatGPT search answers. This happens more than you’d think: someone copies a “block all AI bots” template, a builder setting gets ticked, or a security plugin adds rules.

How to check: our free check reads your robots.txt and lists exactly which AI crawlers are allowed or blocked, including OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User and GPTBot. Firewalls and bot-protection services can also turn crawlers away before robots.txt matters. We can’t see those rules from outside, so ask your host if you use one. The fix is step 1 of our guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT.

Cause 2: Is Your Page Mostly Pictures?

Plenty of small-business sites look great but say almost nothing in text: a big photo, a logo, a “Book now” button. Menus, price lists and service lists are often images or PDFs, or load inside JavaScript widgets. Testing by Vercel and MERJ found the major AI crawlers, including OpenAI’s, don’t run JavaScript, so they may find almost nothing to read.

How to check: our free check counts the words AI crawlers can read in your page’s raw HTML, flags pages under about 300 words, and shows a preview of what crawlers find. Fix: put your key details on the page as real text.

Cause 3: Can AI Tell What and Where Your Business Is?

“Quality you can trust since 1998” doesn’t tell an AI whether you’re a roofer or a bakery. AI needs plain facts: what you do, where, for whom, and how to reach you. Business schema (LocalBusiness or Organization structured data) spells those facts out in a format machines read exactly, and an About page shows who’s behind the business.

How to check: we look for business and entity schema, a clear page title and description, an About page or author signal, and question-style headings with short answers AI can quote.

Cause 4: Do Other Sites Mention You?

AI tends to recommend businesses it can confirm from several places: review sites, directories, local news and industry lists. ChatGPT now gets Yelp reviews and business details directly through a licensing deal announced in July 2026. If you have few reviews or listings, or your details differ from site to site, AI has less to go on.

This one happens off your website, and our checker can’t measure it. Start by claiming your main listings, keeping your name, address, phone and hours identical everywhere, and inviting happy customers to leave reviews where each site’s rules allow it.

How Do I Check the On-Site Causes?

Run your homepage through our free check. In about 10 seconds it covers causes 1 to 3: crawler access, readable text and business details, with your top three fixes as copy-paste code. Then work through the how-to guide. If you rank well on Google but ChatGPT still skips you, read Does ChatGPT use Google?, because the two don’t always line up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?

Usually because it can find and describe them more easily: their site lets AI crawlers in, says clearly what they do and where, and other sites mention them. Check your own site for blocked crawlers, thin text and missing business details first.

I show up on Google. Why not on ChatGPT?

ChatGPT search doesn’t simply copy Google. OpenAI names Bing as a search partner and runs its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. If your robots.txt blocks that crawler, or you aren’t in Bing, a strong Google ranking may not carry over.

Can I correct wrong information ChatGPT says about my business?

There’s no business listing inside ChatGPT to edit. You can flag a bad answer with the feedback buttons, but the lasting fix is correcting the facts at the source: your website and your listings on other sites.

What doesn’t the free check cover?

It checks your page and your robots.txt. It doesn’t check reviews or listings on other sites, firewall or bot-protection rules, whether pages are hidden from search engines, or whether you’re indexed in Bing or Google.
