How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT

Last reviewed: Oct 2026 · ClickThisLink Team

There’s no form to fill in and no paid slot. ChatGPT recommends businesses it can find, read and trust. That means letting its search crawler into your site, saying what you do and where in plain text, and being mentioned on other sites. Nobody can guarantee a recommendation, but you can remove what stops one.

Why Does ChatGPT Recommend My Competitor Instead?

When someone asks ChatGPT for “a good bakery near me” or “an accountant who works with small businesses,” it often searches the web, reads a handful of pages, and names the businesses it can describe with confidence. If a competitor’s site clearly says what they do, where they are and who they serve, and other sites back that up, they’re an easy pick.

If your site is hard to read, or blocks ChatGPT’s crawler, you may not even be in the pile it chooses from. It isn’t personal. OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers alongside its own crawler, and answers change with the wording, the person and the day.

Step 1: Let ChatGPT’s Crawlers Into Your Site

OpenAI uses separate crawlers for separate jobs, and your robots.txt file can allow or block each one:

So you can say no to training (GPTBot) and still say yes to search (OAI-SearchBot). If you want to be recommended, OAI-SearchBot is the one to let in. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach its search systems.

Our free check reads your robots.txt and lists which of these bots, plus Claude, Perplexity, Grok and Google’s AI crawler, are allowed or blocked. Some website builders add AI-blocking rules with one checkbox (see our Squarespace guide), and some firewalls block bots before robots.txt even matters. No outside checker can see those firewall rules, so ask your host if you use one.

Step 2: Say What You Do, Where, and for Whom, in Real Text

AI crawlers read words. Testing by Vercel and MERJ found that the major AI crawlers, including OpenAI’s, don’t run JavaScript. Text that only appears after scripts load, or text baked into photos and PDFs, may be invisible to them. Make sure your homepage says, in plain sentences:

Then add business schema: a small block of structured data (LocalBusiness or Organization in JSON-LD) that spells out your name, address, phone and website in a format machines read exactly. A short FAQ with questions customers really ask helps too, because assistants like to lift short, direct answers.

Our free check measures how much readable text is in your page’s HTML (we look for 300+ words) and checks for business schema, FAQ markup, question-style headings, a clear title and description, and an About page or author signal.

Step 3: Get Mentioned on Other Sites

ChatGPT doesn’t only read your site. It also reads what others say about you. Yelp, for example, now licenses its reviews, ratings, photos and business details to OpenAI for ChatGPT’s local answers. Reviews, directory listings, local news and industry sites all help AI confirm you’re real and good at what you do.

Keep your business name, address, phone and hours identical everywhere, so every source clearly describes the same business. We’ll be upfront: this part happens off your website, and our checker can’t measure it.

What Can’t You Do?

How Do I Check Where I Stand?

Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers would ask, a few times on different days, and note who it names. Then run our free check on your homepage. In about 10 seconds you’ll see whether ChatGPT’s crawlers are allowed in, how much text AI can read, and your top three fixes as copy-paste code. If ChatGPT names a competitor instead of you, our guide to why your business isn’t showing up on ChatGPT walks through the likely causes one by one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pay to have ChatGPT recommend my business?

No. ChatGPT has started testing ads, but OpenAI says ads don’t influence its answers and are always labeled separately. Being recommended in the answer itself comes from being easy to find, read and trust.

How long does it take for ChatGPT to notice my changes?

OpenAI says robots.txt changes reach ChatGPT search in about 24 hours. Content changes depend on when your pages are crawled again and picked up by its search partners, so expect days to weeks, not minutes. There’s no fixed timeline.

Should I block GPTBot?

That’s your call. GPTBot is OpenAI’s training crawler. Blocking it doesn’t block OAI-SearchBot, the crawler ChatGPT search uses, so you can opt out of training and still be found in ChatGPT search.

Does llms.txt help ChatGPT recommend me?

Maybe a little, someday. llms.txt is a new, proposed standard and isn’t widely used by AI engines yet, so we label it emerging and give it a small weight. Crawler access and clear page text matter far more.
