Is My Squarespace Site Visible to ChatGPT?
Last reviewed: Oct 2026 · ClickThisLink Team
Yes, by default. Squarespace leaves AI crawlers allowed unless you tick “Block known artificial intelligence crawlers” in Settings, then Crawlers. Even then, its list blocks GPTBot (OpenAI’s training crawler) but not OAI-SearchBot, the crawler ChatGPT search uses. What usually holds Squarespace sites back is thin text and missing business details.

What Does “Block Known Artificial Intelligence Crawlers” Do?
The checkbox lives in Settings, then Crawlers, and it’s off by default. When you tick it, Squarespace adds rules to your robots.txt asking 26 named bots not to crawl your site. The list includes:
- GPTBot (OpenAI’s training crawler)
- ClaudeBot and anthropic-ai (Anthropic)
- Google-Extended (Google’s AI training control)
- Applebot-Extended, CCBot, Amazonbot, Bytespider, Meta-ExternalAgent and others
What it doesn’t list, per Squarespace’s help page (updated January 8, 2026): OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User (ChatGPT search and browsing), PerplexityBot and GrokBot. So ticking the box mostly opts you out of AI training, and ChatGPT search can still read your site. Squarespace says it may add bots over time, so re-check after any change.
If you want AI to find you, Squarespace’s own AI-search guide says to leave the box unchecked. Our free check reads your robots.txt and shows exactly which AI crawlers are allowed. If the box is ticked, you’ll see GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended listed as blocked.
Can I Edit robots.txt on Squarespace?
No. Squarespace says all its sites use the same robots.txt file, and users can’t access or edit it. Your AI-related controls are the crawler checkbox and the option to hide individual pages from search results. For most businesses that’s fine: the default file lets search engines and AI crawlers in.
When our checker detects Squarespace, its paste steps skip robots.txt edits for this reason and point you to the checkbox instead.
Should I Add llms.txt on Squarespace?
Version 7.1 sites can add one in the SEO/AI Visibility panel: SEO Settings, then the LLMS.txt tab. It stays off until you paste text in. Version 7.0 sites don’t have this setting.
Be realistic about it. llms.txt is a new, proposed standard, and Squarespace itself calls it “still actively in development.” It isn’t widely used by AI engines yet, so our checker labels it emerging and gives it a small weight. On 7.1 it takes a few minutes and can’t hurt, but crawler access and clear page text matter much more.
How Do I Add Business Schema on Squarespace?
First, see what’s already there: our free check lists the schema types it finds on your page. To add LocalBusiness schema with your name, address, phone, hours and website, paste a JSON-LD script into Code Injection, in the Header field. Squarespace lists Code Injection on its Core, Plus and Advanced plans (and some legacy plans), so it isn’t on every plan.
When the free check finds schema missing, it builds a ready-to-paste block from your own page and, when it detects Squarespace, shows where to paste it. Also put the same facts in visible text: what you do, where you are, your hours and how to reach you. Image-heavy templates look great but can give AI very little to read.
Squarespace’s AI Visibility Tool or Our Free Check?
Squarespace has its own AI Visibility tool for English-language 7.1 sites. It runs prompts through ChatGPT and Gemini and shows how often your business is mentioned and which competitors appear. It uses AI credits, and how many you get depends on your plan.
That’s a different job from ours. Squarespace’s tool tests the answers: does AI mention you? Our free check tests your site: can AI crawlers get in and read it, and what should you fix first? They work well together. Fix the site issues, then use prompt testing to watch for results. If AI still names a competitor, our troubleshooting guide covers the off-site causes too.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Squarespace block ChatGPT?
Not by default. The “Block known artificial intelligence crawlers” box is unchecked unless you tick it. Even when it’s ticked, its list includes GPTBot (training) but not OAI-SearchBot, so ChatGPT search can still read your site.
Can I edit robots.txt on Squarespace?
No. Squarespace says every site uses the same robots.txt and users can’t edit it. Your only AI crawler switch is Settings, then Crawlers. You can also hide individual pages from search results in page settings.
Does Squarespace support llms.txt?
Yes, on version 7.1 sites: SEO/AI Visibility panel, SEO Settings, LLMS.txt tab. Version 7.0 sites can’t add one. It’s optional: llms.txt is a new, proposed standard and isn’t widely used by AI engines yet.
Is Squarespace bad for AI search?
No. Its default setup lets AI crawlers in and serves real HTML. Problems usually come from content: pages that are mostly images, no plain description of the business, or no business schema.
