Does ChatGPT Use Google?

Last reviewed: Oct 2026 · ClickThisLink Team

Not officially. OpenAI names Microsoft’s Bing (and Shopify) in its ChatGPT search documentation and runs its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Independent tests have found ChatGPT sometimes cites pages only Google had indexed. So the honest answer is mostly no, sometimes yes. Don’t rely on your Google ranking alone.

What Does OpenAI Say ChatGPT Search Uses?

OpenAI’s help center says ChatGPT search “sometimes partners with other search providers,” rewriting your question into search queries it sends them, and it points to Microsoft’s and Shopify’s privacy policies for how those providers handle queries. For Enterprise and Edu workspaces, OpenAI says it shares search queries with Bing. OpenAI also runs its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to find pages for ChatGPT search, and it licenses content from partners such as Yelp.

Google isn’t named anywhere in that documentation. But “sometimes partners with other search providers” leaves the door open.

Is There Evidence ChatGPT Uses Google Anyway?

Some. In 2025, SEO researchers built pages that only Google could index, then asked ChatGPT about them, and ChatGPT cited those pages. Semrush reported a repeat of the test that suggested paid ChatGPT plans used Google results and the free plan didn’t. These are small experiments, not official statements, and OpenAI’s providers can change at any time.

Bottom line: Bing and OpenAI’s own crawler are the documented routes, and Google may be a backup route. Being visible in all of them is the safe bet.

Why Doesn’t My Google Ranking Carry Over?

Ranking on page one of Google doesn’t automatically put you in ChatGPT’s answers, because:

Does ChatGPT Use Google Reviews or Yelp?

Yelp: yes. In July 2026 Yelp started licensing its reviews, ratings, photos and business details to OpenAI, and ChatGPT shows them in local answers with Yelp branding and links. In August, Yelp added restaurant reservations and waitlists inside ChatGPT in the US and Canada.

Google reviews: no announced deal. ChatGPT might come across Google review content indirectly, but you shouldn’t count on it. If you only manage your Google profile, make sure your Yelp page and other directory listings are claimed, accurate and match your website.

What Should a Small Business Do?

  1. Let OAI-SearchBot in. Make sure robots.txt allows it and your firewall doesn’t block it.
  2. Get your site into Bing. Bing Webmaster Tools is free: add your site, verify it and submit your sitemap. Our checker doesn’t test whether you’re indexed in Bing, so do this step yourself.
  3. Keep doing Google SEO. It still drives Google search and Google’s AI features, and it may help with ChatGPT too.
  4. Claim your Yelp page and other listings so your details match your website.
  5. Make your homepage readable: real text about what you do and where, plus business schema.

How Do I Check If AI Crawlers Can Read My Site?

Our free check covers the parts on your own website: whether robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, GPTBot and other AI crawlers, whether you publish a sitemap (Bing and Google both use one), how much readable text is in your page’s HTML, and whether your business details are in structured data. It takes about 10 seconds. It doesn’t check your Bing or Google indexing or your reviews. For the full picture, see why a business doesn’t show up on ChatGPT.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ChatGPT use Bing?

Yes. OpenAI’s ChatGPT search documentation names Microsoft (Bing) as a search provider, and Bing is the provider for Enterprise and Edu workspaces. ChatGPT also uses OpenAI’s own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and sometimes other providers.

Does ChatGPT use Google reviews?

There’s no announced deal between Google and OpenAI for reviews. ChatGPT may see Google review content indirectly, but it isn’t a documented source. Yelp reviews, by contrast, are licensed to OpenAI as of July 2026.

Does ChatGPT use Yelp?

Yes. Since July 2026, ChatGPT can show Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details in local answers, with Yelp links. Yelp reservations and waitlists also work inside ChatGPT in the US and Canada.

If I rank #1 on Google, will ChatGPT recommend me?

Not necessarily. It helps, but ChatGPT leans on Bing and its own crawler, and it picks businesses it can describe confidently. Make sure OAI-SearchBot can read your site and that you’re in Bing too.
